By Nils Valentin Long review: 10 min.| I got the HF11 video camera in urgent need for a specific occasion. The 60th fireworks event of Suwako lake / Nagano Prefecture in Japan on 15th August 2008. (official sale start in Japan) As the overall package Canon with its long term experience in Imaging seemed like "The natural Choice to make". The video camera integrates a huge amount of intelligent functions that ensure the quality of your video experience. - image stabilizer, - light sensitivity sensor, - profiles - variable zoom speeds, - remaining battery status info, - alignment markers in the screen - smart replay functions (slow motion, freezing , advancing frame by frame etc.) On top of that the video cameras body weight with 380gr. and the size of your favourite beverage is well acceptable even for ladies or kids hands. The HF11 does come with a few usability hitches in terms of inconsistency, bugs etc. (see my how to guide for details), but besides that, the HF11's navigation is intuitive and exactly as the digital camera products. So, that was not a showstopper for us. Most users are able to use the product within minutes !! For video editing features you might want to look into additional software editing and codec converter solutions like Divx, Xvid etc. to be able to share the joy with your friends on DVD etc. The package contains all possible cables but NOT the ultra compact HDMI cable connection. The major salespoints of this video camera are - Imaging quality (resolution and smoothness of video) - Canons colours - Usability - Usability and - Usability The Imaging quality is unlike anything I have seen before and easily justifies the product alone. HF11, HF10 or HF100, which one should I get ? If you cant compromise video quality for anything get the HF11 with its 24mbps recording mode and be rest assured you have the extra stretch when you need it f.e. in low light scenarios and the best model on the marcet in the personal camcorder class. Otherwise, if you can life with good quality and the same usability and other features as the big brother than you can make a deal by getting the HF10 or the HF100. The intelligent functions and the exceptionally good design make the HF100, the HF10 or the HF11 the natural choice for beginners, amateurs and entry professionals. This is the quality customers are expecting from a long term Imaging company like Canon !! Additional Notes: Vibrations: Note that other camcorders with moving parts f.e. HDD's might not be working in extreme situations with strong vibrations f.e in concerts due to bass vibration. The camcorder makers do specifically NOT recommend taking videos in live houses - as they formulate it. So you might find yourself having to record onto the memory card while the HDD is NOT usable. (I mention it because its not so obvious from the product descriptions of camcorders.) Fortunately with the HF11/HF10/HF100 or any flash memory based camcorder you dont have to worry about this too ;-) Memory usage: 8GB of memory will provide you with 1h of best quality Full HD pleasure. So even if you just use the 32GB internal memory it means that the HF11 has enough storage for 4h of best quality Full HD video. Thats plenty f.e. for your best friends wedding ceremony, the wedding party afterwards and even your kids school ceremony the next day. Also memory usage is the same when actually comparing, this video camera has at least 3.5 times more details on the screen than the best digital camera out there with video function. Krupa Tested three low cost HD camcorders: 1st: Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD100 2nd: DXG 569V Silver Ultra-Slim HD 3rd:Aiptek Action HD GVS 1080P to give you some background for reference. My primary objects for video are family and pets. I use iMovie and Studio8 for video editing. I have experience with other consumer HD cams such as the Canon HF100 and Panasonic SD100 both in a higher price class. For Photos I use a Canon G9 and have therefore not evaluated photo ability of those tested. My main reasons for considering the three cams are price, convenience, and most important the ease of the file-format. As for now I say no thanks to AVCHD. Used the following criteria: video clip format quality of the videos quality of sound field of view focus speed feel and quality of the product ease of use battery live First up was the... Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD100: video clip format: - MP4- very convenient- played right away on Mac & PC provided you have QT and a strong graphics card. Also played right away on PS3 quality of the videos: - good picture clarity but light/dark transitions produced too high contrasts & whites were overblown. Unfortunately the auto-focus was a disaster loosing focus for no apparent reason and without change in the scene. Oftentimes it took several camera swings and zooms to re-gain focus. quality of sound: - acceptable with the standard low background hissing. field of view: - very narrow (very zoomed in like 40-45mm in the 35mm equiv.) focus speed: - a disaster, could not stay focused even when on tripod facing a still scene feel and quality of the product: - okay feel, somewhat flimsy as evidenced by the port cover not a stellar design. ease of use: - buttons in a very inconvenient layout (without being picky here) I oftentimes found myself in the menu trying to start recording with small hands. battery life: - too little time with camera to truly evaluate. Verdict: camera went back mainly due to focus issue and field of view. Next in line... DXG 569V Silver Ultra-Slim HD video clip format: - - MOV - played right away on Mac & PC provided you have QT and a strong graphics card. Unfortunately required conversion for PS3 use. quality of the videos: - fairly acceptable for this price class, not as crisp as the above Sanyo but better low light characteristics and better transitions between lights and darks over the Sanyo. Overall slightly lower quality then Sanyo. quality of sound: - no hissing but faint and distant. In short, barely acceptable field of view: - acceptable estim. around 35-38mm (35mm equiv.& about even with many digital picture cameras) focus speed: - this camera did not have autofocus but the fixed focus was very acceptable as long as objects were at least 3' away, macro mode worked great and the switch was conveniently placed for a quick switch while panning around a room to move in for a close analysis of an object. feel and quality of the product: - I was very drawn to this camera for its form-factor, and overall feel. Ergonomically it felt best of the three cameras, it had a quality feel and finish for its price class and a very nice 3" display that was viewable from most angles. Buttons were very conveniently placed alleviating mishaps. The LED light in the front was amazingly bright, it would have been a great little interviewing camera for dim lighting situations if it was not for the poor sound. ease of use: - very easy to use, good menu layout but at times the menu items required a second push to accept a setting. battery live: - too little time with camera to truly evaluate but it appeared too short. Verdict: I would have likely kept this model, however after three days of use the SD card spring mechanism failed rendering the camera useless. I contemplated to re-order the same model but eventually let it go due to poor sound and weak battery live. and last...

Mark III vs. Mark IV By Mark Kitaoka I had the Mark IV on order with Amazon since Canon's product announcement on October 20th of 2009. Since my local camera shop received the unit on Monday January 4, 2010 and Amazon still listed it as "Not Yet Received" I purchased mine from the local retailer despite the additional $464 in sales tax. I have been a Mark III shooter since June of 2007. For my professional work, my primary subject matter is live theatrical performance which includes acting as well as dancing ranging from ballet to traditional Tango to the very fast paced ballroom, specifically shooting Burn the Floor, which is just completing their Broadway run this month. Live performance shooting has many of the same elements of sports photography, except the lighting is much lower and at times more severe due to stage lighting. My Mark III performed well in most instances although I did have occasions where the autofocus did not perform as well as I had hoped. But to be fair, I cannot say with 100% certainty that it was the fault of the gear or the user, me. For my non professional work I utilized the Mark III for extensive street shooting in the rain, high wind and many other adverse conditions. In all cases the camera performed well enough that I could only blame myself in those instances where I didn't get the shot. This includes night shooting of high movement subject matter. I have never been concerned about the 10.1 MP size of the Mark III having had many of my images blown up to 6x8 feet posters used on the outside of theatres and large shots used in four color programs. I had several concerns with the Mark III which I had hoped would be addressed in its successor, the Mark IV: 1. A higher ISO range with equal or less noise 2. The ability for the focus point to switch when changing from landscape to portrait orientation. - Although the Custom Function allows one to change the rear wheel to adjust the focus point, I prefer to use that dial to adjust for exposure. Having to switch in a very fast paced situation caused me to miss some great shots. 3. More selection of focus points for manual focus point adjustment Other than those three wishes, I was happy with my Mark III. In all three cases, the Mark IV met my wishes. I have done a comparison in low light, low contrast situations with both Marks at ISO 6400, which for the Mark III was considered H1. As such, adjusting the ISO from 3200 to 6400 was not possible in 1/3 stop increments. More on that later. In the comparison, the Mark IV handily beats the Mark III in terms of detail and noise at ISO 6400. Much more detail is visible which has something to do with a higher MP count, but at 100% crops, there is a marked difference. The noise on the Mark IV is less and of a different quality than the Mark III, more film like than digital. During performances I had only used ISO 6400 in conditions which made lower settings impossible. I have always thought that a noisy shot is much better than one that is blurred beyond usage. My clients agree. One of my favorite lenses to use while shooting on stage as well as from the house is the EF 24-105mm f4.0 IS L. The focal range on a 1.3 crop sensor is just PERFECT, but the slowness of the f4.0 kept me from utilizing that lens with the Mark III unless lighting was sufficient. This will all change with the Mark IV as ISO 6400 is just fine using a f4.0 lens in my conditions. Keep in mind that everyone needs to decide how a camera is to be used, under what conditions and it is naive to think that an investment in current glass won't influence a decision to stay or leave any brand of camera. I am heavily invested in Canon glass and all of them are L series lenses. I find that the color and sharpness of L series lenses are worth the investment, especially since I purchase most of them on the used market. There are folks who love to go back and forth on

I thought maybe it was just the screen but when I put the memory card in my lap top the pictures were green and fuzzy too. This would clear up if I left it on for a while but it kept taking longer and longer for the screen to clear up and now it is basically useless. Great for the Money By Scott While it's nice to have a high quality camera, my wife and I tend to break the things before we get the value out of them. I bought this camera for a very good price and it works great. The memory card makes it very easy to interface with the computer and TV. SVP HDDV-3001 By Anita F. Hales The product is cheaply made but I guess that goes with a cheap purchase. My camera has a defective battery which makes it almost impossible to use. IT only holds a charge for a few minutes and will not fully charge. It's almost not worth sending back because of all the charges they make for restocking and shipping. I wish I'd purchased something else. The picture is so-so. It's really too bad it's made so poorly, the features would be nice if they all worked as advertised. Zoom is worthless.
